While the most common cause is certain foods we eat, could it be hiatal hernia? What is hiatal hernia? All internal organs have their proper place in the body. When an organ invades an unlikely place, it is called a hernia. The diaphragm contains an opening called the hiatus through which the esophagus enters and connects to the stomach. When the stomach also comes through that opening, it is termed a hiatal hernia or hiatus hernia. Two types: Sliding hiatal hernia: This type is the most common of the two. The stomach and an adjoining part of the esophagus slides upward into the chest cavity by way of the hiatus opening in the diaphragm.
