Hiatal hernia is medical complication in which the stomach and
other internal organs or tissues are swelled and bulges into the chest
cavity. This problem occurs due to some defect in diaphragm, or
weakness in diaphragm. The symptoms of a these diseases are not so
clearly discovered, but it is suggested by the medical experts and the
doctors, to notice even the minor signs of it like heart burn and
gastric refluxes. The symptoms of a hiatal hernia cannot be discovered
until the time of surgery. Even doctors cannot monitor the symptoms of
hiatal hernia.
Hiatal hernia caused due to congenital defects in esophageal hiatus
and it is common in many people. In this, the esophagus is attached
with a diaphragm so loose, which allows the sliding of esophagus and
in stomach into chest cavity. Diaphragm has a hole for esophagus
hiatus, through which esophagus passed down and connects with the
stomach. When stomach moves up through this hole, to the chest cavity,
this situation is called as hiatal hernia.
Hiatal hernia is an asymptomatic disease, a patient never realize
that he is suffering from hiatal hernia. Each patient suffers from
different symptoms of it, having hiatal hernia. In some cases, a
patient only feels like heartburn, which is dismissed as assuming it
normal problem. In other cases, patients can experience regular chest
pain, problem in eating, and problem in sleeping.
The symptoms of hiatal hernia, which are discovered, by patients
and surgeons are chronic heartburn in which patient can feel excessive
burning in heart, frog like feeling in throat sensation, which may
change the voice of patient. Excessive or minor chest pain after
eating or before eating, a feeling of fullness in stomach without
having a meal, and inability in swallowing saliva or food or liquid
are some other symptoms. The problem of inability in swallowing
occurs in very rare cases, but requires being test and curing at right
time, or it may cause complications. A patient can also feel like its
stomach is hanging over diaphragm muscles.
Other symptoms of hiatal hernia are formation of gas and passing
through anus, back flow of eaten food in throat from stomach, which is
normal symptom of hiatal hernia. General symptoms includes a feeling
of vomiting in which taste of mouth becomes sour or bitter, sudden and
continuous hiccups, continuous belching, chest pain rising inside the
breastbone or sternum, feeling of bloating in stomach after eating,
feeling of excessive or minor pressure in chest and discomfort in
abdominal area. Unexpected and unexplained coughing in throat, back
flow of stomach content in esophagus and pressure in abdominal area
after having a meal or after eating, these are the symptoms of hiatal
hernia, which are discovered in a patient during the time of suffering
from minor or severe hernia.
These symptoms are not noticed generally in the beginning, but when
noticed, then it is necessary to do some tests on the patient. Through
these tests, doctors can monitor the severity and complications of
hernia in patients. Hiatal hernia is an anatomical abnormality and
occurs normally after the age of 60.
